Doctors also experimented with using electricity directly as part of surgical procedures. Techniques such as electro-cauterization and (later) electrolysis meant that they could use electric currents to destroy living tissue, which innovated procedures such as tumor-removal.

Other times, electricity was used to power surgical tools, especially drills and saws.
