The Mysteries and secrets of magic
C.J.S. Thompson. Philadelphia : J.B. Lippincott Company, 1928.
Medicine, religion, spirituality, and magic often overlap in medical history as humans sought answers to cure their bodily woes. Illnesses were also often attributed to supernatural causes such as the evil spirits represented in this image, which is why our collections have numerous works on these topics.
A British physician and writer as well as the curator for the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, Charles John Samuel Thompson (1862-1943) wrote a number of books on medical history, alchemy, poison, pharmacology, folklore and the supernatural, and everything in between.
